Mitchelton Football Club was previously known as the Mitchelton Soccer Club. A few Australian authorities, such as the sports department at the Special Broadcasting Service (SBS), have always used the name "football". In 2004, Soccer Australia (Soccer’s governing body in Australia) changed its name to the Football Federation Australia, and announced that the official name of the sport in Australia will now be known as "football".
This has been met with controversy and bemusement by followers of Australian Rules Football and Rugby League which is popular in Australia. The Football Federation of Australia has the right to decide what their competition will be called but ironically do not have the right to decide what the people can or can't call it.
We think it is rather funny that some supporters of Australian Rules Football and Rugby League are bemused by the new use of the word football for soccer considering that soccer is played with the feet, which, unlike the sports of Rugby League and Australian Rules Football are played predominately with the hands. Mitchelton Football club supports the change of the use of the name soccer to football. |
